Risk Assessments

Risk Assessment

If you are an employer and have 5 or more staff then you need to write down how you are dealing with health and safety in the workplace, you will need to have a policy that lays out who is ultimately responsible for health and safety, your general approach to health and safety and how this will be managed, by who and how they will manage it.

This is then read and signed for by all employees to confirm they understand, buy into and conform to this policy. Risk Assessments (RA) will also need to be completed, written down and signed for by all employees. So….

Hazards and Risks

You can only start to manage health and safety within your business if you know and understand what the hazards (anything that could cause harm) are and therefore what the risk is (Risk is the likelihood that someone could be harmed by the hazards).

So, by identifying all the hazards you can then decide who could be harmed and how, evaluate the risks and decide on precautions (how to reduce the risk), record your findings and then review and update them as required. This is what a risk assessment is.

Sounds simple?  Don’t worry RA’s get even the hardiest construction managers into a cold sweat!

I have a great online course which is an introduction to Risk Assessments. This course explains how important RA are (yes, they are a legal document). It will also give you practical advice on how to identify hazards and analyse risk in your workplace. This course is approved by IIRSM – duration 90 min approx. – Cost Β£17.50

Remember, don’t sweat it alone, please ask for help as this is something that you need to legally do and not only that we want to make sure that anyone that comes into our place of work, employees, contractors or members of the public do not come to harm.
